The cover of the book. The title, Fragments, in handwritten purple text at the top and the words reflections on disconnection by Deborah Ewing, also purple, at the bottom. The text runs over a photo of gold-green weed & pale lily pads on the surface of a pond. Yellow, green & pink leaves blurred in the murky water..

Poetry

You might find haiku, early attempts at ghazal, other couplets, a close look at found objects or a distant glimpse of unspeakable loss. Fragments is a collection of short poems and photos. It’s a reflection on disconnection, or fragmentation, and how we may still glimpse the whole in the broken pieces.
Starting With Light is a selection of seasonal haiku. Rhyme for Reason is a book of verse on childhood. Read a selection of the poems or download a free chapbook by clicking the image.

Blog

The Shorelines blog – Reflections from the edge – is sometimes about shorelines. Usually it is about parallel lines, or more accurately parallel lives. It offers reflections on the ways humans live alongside each other, connecting closely or not at all. Cargo ships on the horizon, the wharfs along the Durban harbour, the water's edge, the railway line, the embankment, the Margaret Mncadi esplanade, the tunnels below and the bridges above, are almost worlds of their own. Worlds that intersect in bizarre, dangerous and beautiful ways.

Publications

It's an eclectic mix – books for children, with children; books about children, in their words, books to encourage adults to talk to children...Not just children's books, some social history, some research, training materials. My focus is social justice issues, especially children's rights, inclusion and sexual and reproductive health.
The image above is from Akhona's Journey. This is a video with a story book and resource pack. It tells the true-to-life story of a South African girl who experienced abuse and her struggle for justice and healing.
