Shorelines is the poetry, photography and perplexity blog of Deborah Ewing.

Deborah is a Durban-based writer, living on the outer edge of the inner city, inspired and overwhelmed by its contradictions.

She makes a living designing projects and developing publications focused on inclusivity and justice in society, the environment and the economy.

She creates accessible media, addressing social issues through storytelling and writing for and with, children. This includes books to promote positive conversations between children and adults about puberty and preventing child abuse.

Deborah has worked for many years with children in Msinga, KwaZulu-Natal, to co-create bilingual books on animal and human health.

She also writes audio descriptions to make film, art and other visual content accessible to blind people.

Deborah has authored 12 books, fiction and non-fiction, some with translations into French, Swahili, Amharic and isiZulu. She has edited newspapers and magazines, and contributed chapters and articles to more than 60 books and journals on social justice. 

She serves as Présidente of the Alliance Française de Durban, Chair of the Mdukatshani Rural Development Trust and as a member of the International School of South Africa.

She writes poetry mainly as a meditation, a way of facing the awful and the awesome.
